Sony NEX-5 & NEX-3 Digital Cameras

Now photographers can enjoy the superlative picture quality and shooting responses prized by DSLR users in two beautifully compact new cameras that are brilliantly easy to use, brought to you by Sony. Joining the family, the NEX-5 and NEX-3 team DSLR-quality imaging with the convenience of interchangeable lenses in a sleek new design that slips easily into a jacket pocket or bag. In contrast with conventional DSLR models, the “mirrorless” construction shrinks the thickness of both cameras to just 24.2mm (NEX-5 excluding grip and mount) and 25.4mm (NEX-3, excluding grip and mount) at their slimmest point. As a luxurious extra refinement, the NEX-5 features a tough yet light-weight magnesium body, making it the world’s smallest and lightest interchangeable lens digital camera.

Olympus E-P1

The Micro Four Thirds digital camera segment just got a whole lot more interesting with the relatively official announcement of the Olympus E-P1 which joins the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1. The wonders of Micro Four Thirds formats comes down to a middle ground of DSLR-esque performance results, exchangeable lenses and the smaller sizing of a consumer compact. The range-finder E-P1 gains points for one of the most aesthetically pleasing cameras in some time rivaled only by the likes of Leica’s offerings. The specs are yet to be confirmed but some suggestions include 13MP RAW, JPEG, RAW+JPEG modes, 1280×720 720p video over 7 minutes, 640×480 video over 14 minutes, ISO 200-6400 and shutter speeds ranging from 60 sec - 1/4000 sec. We’ll try to update this info as it becomes available.

Flip Ultra HD: Our Favorite Cheap Camcorder Goes HD

The most majorest problems with the Flip Mino HD are its squinty small screen and narrow lens, so seeing an HD rendition of our favorite cheap camcorder—the Flip Ultra HD—makes us happy.

Besides going HD—bringing it up to par with our other fave, Kodak's ZI6—the Flip Ultra HD gets HDMI, a rare rainbow unicorn for these cheap pocket cams. It's got two hours of record time, and removable rechargeable batteries.[Gaxonline via Engadget

Canon EOS 500D/Rebel T1i DSLR

The whole DSLR world just got all that more competitive as Canon recently announced its latest members to the family, the EOS 500D/Rebel T1i (name dependent on where you live). The addition to the Rebel collection, the EOS 500D effectively cannibalizes Canon’s other crop sensor camera, the 50D (which I was bitching about on my twitter ha) as it incorporates the same 15.1 MP sensor with similar ISO ranges AS WELL as offering HD-recording. While not on par with the Canon 5D Mark II, the camera does shoot 720p @ 30 fps or 1080p @ a reduced 20 fps. The camera also enjoys a nice 920,000 pixels viewing screen. The estimated street price when it drops in May is approximately $799 USD (body-only) and $899 for the kit which includes the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens. The 500D now joins the 5D Mark II and Nikon D90 as the front-runners in the HD-capable DSLR segment.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1

Launched last year and offering a new option for those wanting some of the features of a traditional DSLR body in a more compact package, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 and its four-thirds format were arguably the front-runners as more camera brands look to travel down the more compact route. However in recent memory thanks to the Canon 5D Mark II and the Nikon D90, high-definition video has become a new sought-after feature in DSLR-style cameras, combining stunning quality with the versatility of interchangeable lenses. An update to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 now yields a full high-def version which shoots 1080p @ 24 fps or 720p @ 60 fps, framed with a 3-inch LCD screen or digital viewfinder. Some other notables alongside this release are a new “video optimized” 14-140 mm f/4.0-5.8 lens (read: quiet) and a “Creative Mode” which allows for instantaneous aperture and exposure control during recording. As the online world moves to new forms of digital communication, video playback through new innovations like these will arguably be the mainstay in just a short little while.
